What Are Essential Fatty Acids?
You may have heard before that our skin is our largest organ. Did you also know that the skin on our bodies is a very metabolically active organ?
Our skin is made up primarily of two structural layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the top layer and it includes sebaceous glands, sweat glands and hair follicles. The dermis, which lays underneath, supplies nutritional and structural support to the epidermis.
The epidermis actively synthesizes fatty acids, cholesterol and ceramides. So what are essential fatty acids? Fatty acids are the building blocks of the fat in our skin.
The two essential fatty acids are linoleic acid (omega-6) and α-linolenic acid (omega-3). They are “essential” because they cannot be made by the body on its own and must be supplemented through diet or topical application (body oil!).
Studies have shown that many skin issues can result from the lack of, or disturbance of, skin lipids, including fatty acids. Some studies have even shown that low levels of linoleic acid in the skin may be correlated to skin conditions such as acne and eczema.
